When one person is incarcerated, an entire family serves time on the outside. Tap to explore the data behind the financial, emotional, and generational cost — and why the family side of this work matters so much.
Open the data →The data below is why we build reentry plans, family orientation, and support systems into everything we do. This isn't a side effect of incarceration. It's a second sentence, served on the outside.
The system extracts wealth from the most vulnerable communities. Families are forced to choose between supporting their loved one and meeting basic needs.
Partners face "disenfranchised grief" — a loss society refuses to acknowledge. The stress of the system moves into the home and stays.
Shock, confusion, and immediate community judgment. Neighbors withdraw support.
Humiliating visitation procedures and expensive communication barriers create constant anxiety.
To avoid stigma, families isolate themselves — which deepens depression and cuts off help.
Parental incarceration is an Adverse Childhood Experience that can alter a child's development and trajectory — unless someone intervenes.
Low-income communities and communities of color face disproportionate family separation. Bubble size = incarceration rate per 100k.
That's not uncommon.
The truth is that most families don't know what it is they want or need.
And that's ok... no one expects you to.

Earlier this year, we started the Justice Impacted Professionals Alliance to be a safe place where those of us who have been through the system (or have directly impacted loved ones) can go to seek support for the various barriers that comes with that territory.
Only requirement for membership is impact.
Can be direct or indirect (via love ones)
Working out 501c(3) status soon
Long-term goal is to provide scholarships to directly impacted foliks.
